Am I being scammed?

Hi All! First off, I read posts on here all the time - this is just my first time posting  So i wanted to say thank you in advance! I purchased a Groupon for 6 Laser Hair Removal Treatments at a place - 6 for full legs, and 6 for bikini (all of private area). They started my bikini the same day as my consultation but didn’t have time to do my legs. I am a type I-II skin type – very fair with dark course hair on both my legs and bikini area. They are using a Candela GentleMax Laser. Here are a couple of my concerns:

  • July 30th – They did my first bikini treatment at 10 Joules. Isn’t this WAY to low?? I started shedding hair 10 days after the treatment and am pretty much hair free right now in my bikini area. But wouldn’t this only be temporary for the follicles that were treated?
  • I started my legs August 6th. I voiced my concerns about the Joules being too low for my bikini and explained how the hairs treated probably wouldn’t be permanently gone. They said they start people low and go higher each time. I said i wanted my legs to be started at a higher rate - i wanted 16 or even 18 Joules. The highest she would put it was 12. Which is still way too low from what I am reading.

Even though I am experiencing hair shedding, it doesn’t necessarily mean those hairs are permanently gone, correct? Being treated at 10 and 12 Joules is way to low. Does anyone have any advice as to how I can get them to up the Joules? Thanks, and any input is appreciated

There are three settings on the Candela Gentlelase that you need to know - pulse, joules and spot size. However, I am not familiar with the Gentlemax, as it also utilises ND:yag laser.

10J is too low on either the alex or the YAG side. Since the OP is so light-skinned, I’d be surprised if they use the YAG, but it really doesn’t matter anyways since the joules are too low for any combination of settings. You really want 14J at a minimum, but 16+ is better. Perhaps you can convince them to get to 14? If they tell you 12 is the max, I really doubt you’ll get them to 16 regardless of what they say, and in fact is one of the reasons I advise against going with places that have groupons.
