AM I BEING RIPPED OFF?? SAME HAIRS GROWING IN!

Hi everyone,

I have had 3 treatments so far and I noticed that the same hairs are cycling in…now, before you claim I am seeing a different hair…I know in at least a few instances it is the same hair. I am removing hair from my chin area (not densely packed). I had one isolated tiny hair growing off in a corner…I got it removed on my first session, which was quite an aggressive one too (my skin scabbed), today, I see that same hair there. I know it’s the same hair because I also have hyperpigmentaiton surrounding it and again, it is isolated off to the side where there were no other coarser hairs. Do I have a bad electrologist? Is she ripping me off?!

I am so discouraged to see all these hairs growing back, the majority I believe to be the SAME. I do not feel like she has been plucking while removing the hairs but something is not right…her success rate at this point is NIL and every week I have new hairs cycling in along with regrowth from the hairs she failed to actually kill…I see her again sometime this week but I am not impressed nor looking forward to it. I just want these hairs gone without having to pay for nothing!

Did you do any tweezing, waxing, pulling of the hair of any kind before you started treatment?

I had initially been tweezing the FEW hairs that I had on my chin, before the recent explosion or overgrowth of them…it is only a recent phenomenon that I have grown more hairs so most of the hairs have rarely been tweezed anyway. Perhaps the more “older” hairs are growing back because they have been tweezed in the past?? Even still I’m sure they weren’t tweezed over 10-30 times. I don’t think my electrologist is effective…I feel these hairs should’ve been killed on the first go, especially since they are usually JUST growing in at all the sessions I’ve had so far…

ETA: In other words, I have grown some hairs that I had never seen or had before in a certain area, and have never been tweezed… and yet they appeared to have regrown after electrolysis.

Also, if she is missing the root on these hairs then she’s missing the roots of nearly all the hairs on my face that I’ve requested to be removed! That sounds like a very high fail rate to me…

Some hairs grow once a year, shed and then go dormant for several months, until it is time for them to do their once a year appearance again.

There is no way we can mark hairs. We can’t put tags on them like we do sharks and bears to know more about their lives. I’m not saying you are incorrect about the same hairs returning or not and I feel it would be hard to convince you that they may be different hairs one micron apart, just taking their turn in the hair growth cycle.

If you didn’t feel the hairs being tweezed, then you will be okay. I personally get drained when I have to keep explaining hair growth cycles to my clients. There has to be a level of trust with electrolysis. Just get the hair removed. Keep your appointments close together and properly spaced in the first six months, in order to keep the area cleared… and then evaluate. Above all, take quality BEFORE pictures and stop tweezing or doing any form of pulling of the hair.

Maybe your testosterone levels are on the high side? Get your inside checked because she may be working as fast as she can while your body is stimulating new hair.

Give your practitioner a chance to work her magic. If you make her too nervous, she may advise you to find another electrologist. Its not fun or practical to travel.

I appreciate your feedback.

I’ve been having appointments weekly, which hasn’t been helpful to my bank account but I also think it’s worth it if this will successfully get rid of the hairs, so far, I haven’t experienced this success so I feel like I’m wasting money.

I do plan to get tested if I can get my doctor to cooperate.

I understand that you may be drained explaining hair cycles to your clients but can you understand why they may be concerned? As an electrologist, are you okay with your client expressing this concern or providing you with feedback on what they think of the results so far?

Yes, I’m patient when people asks questions. I basically repeat my initial consult several times and in several ways over the first 4-6 months. When the client verbalizes that they understand and they relax a bit, then I know I don’t have to keep teaching them basic concepts about how this process works. I already know the outcome and it is a good one, but they don’t. It is hard to trust and I understand that, but it still drains me when I have a very nervous client who texts frequently asking the same questions over and over again. I think I am more patient than most practitioners (smile).

To be perfectly blunt, I think you should stop electrolysis treatment until if/when you seek treatment for your anxiety problems. In a very short period of time you have posted repeatedly, in a panic, about your belief that you are being burned/scarred/ “ripped off” etc. without posting a single picture that I could see for anyone to examine. This, despite reassuring words from a number of professionals. Maybe your electrologist is great, maybe not, but it matters little…if you are constantly in a high state of hysteria, examining your face daily expecting to see problems, then you will never be happy no matter how good your treatments are. It is not reasonable to expect that you will have no regrowth after only 3 treatments or to expect “scarring” after such a short time. Perhaps spend some more time doing research and finding ways to manage your stress levels and THEN worry about permanent hair removal.

Have you got many hairs that need to be removed, is it in the 100s or less.? … You’ve only had 3 treatments, that’s too soon to know if the treatment is working, it will take months before you start seeing results. …

I haven’t posted a picture publicly but have done so privately showing the scabbing. I have sought help for my anxiety and body dysmorphia in the past, but as this is a forum for electrolysis I thought I could seek help, feedback and advice regarding the process here. My anxiety has increased recently DUE to these hairs growing in so I feel that the only thing that can help is getting rid of them, which as you can see, has brought on new anxieties concerning the treatment process. I understand that accepting the reassurance is what I need to do, but that’s not always simple for me to do, especially when I tend to see otherwise. Perhaps I do need to manage my stress levels but would prefer to have treatment done at the same time.

I have never had 100 visible coarse hairs on my chin at one time. But this recent accelerated overgrowth I am seeing now, (i.e. 30+ visible at one time, when I used to be seeing only 2-4), is relatively new to me. It is possible that I could suddenly have a physical/medical problem that needs to be addressed as I’ve never seen anything like this before.

We do not know the pre treatment history. Quite probably You were plucking or at least thoroughly shaving. And now that You let the hairs grow out in order to be treated, You see the whole mess.

Hyperpigmentation is a possible side effect of any normal healing process. It can be caused by electrolysis. But it can also be caused by hairs breaking through the skin - i see it occasionally on fully untreated skin.

You cannot take a spot of hyperpigmentation as the proof of regrowth. Nevertheless some hairs (or clusters of hairs) are difficult to treat and indeed show quite a bit of regrowth over time. I do not have a real explanation but i assume that an incomplete treatment of the follicle might trigger this
(my 1st electrologist left me such a spot in the main wrinkle between chin and lower lip. It was actually a deep hole where hairs were growing from again and again. I finally managed to treat that spot in DIY electrolysis, but it took years. Luckily the hole closed and fully healed over time.

So, if You are going to have electrolysis, You must recognize that we all do our best, but not all of us are equally good. And every electrologist might make mistakes - we are humans, not robots. By far the most of those mistakes You would not even notice, and most of them will just contribute to our efficiency. There are only very few instances where something will not heal permanently - things must go grossly wrong for that.

And please note: no one will rip You off! We get our income from the recommendation of satisfied clients.

Thank you for the advice, but please see my new thread here:

I believe that the majority of hairs may not be regrowth but new hairs coming in rapidly. I also do not have much of a pre-treatment history as I only had a few coarse hairs to begin with that I would pluck and would not see again for a while. I have also never shaved my face.
