Am I a good candidate? Pic attached

Hi everyone,

Here’s a pic with hair (yikes!) of my thigh.I’m skin type IV. Will laser, especially Nd:yag, have positive results on me? Any advice?

Is there possibility of induced growth in this area?

I will come back and update on what the spa said about joules and all that.

Yes, you’re a good candidate. Are you Indian?

Yes, a YAG laser should work very well on this hair.

I don’t think so.

Thank you mumbaigirl. Yes I am.

My options are

  1. nd:yag, $329/ treatment or 1400 for package of 6.
Their setting range is 10 joules to highest of 20 something.
She didn’t know about pulse width and told me she’d call back.

  2. soprano, 1050 for package of 6. I had my lower legs done here and finished 1.5 yrs ago. Results were: decreases thickness of hair by 60% and i can’t make a a guess on reduction of the actual number of hair. I haven’t grown them out. But what I’ve noticed is that they grow very slowly and I have managed to keep myself continuously hair free with 1-2 min of shaving every week or so. My hair were 70% that of a typical hairy Indian guy.

  3. some diode laser (not soprano), 900 for package of 6.

Another question is, why am I being asked to shave 2-3 days before the treatment and not immediately before?

  1. Very low setting irrespective of the spot size and pulse width.

  2. Soprano gets only bad reviews here. I’d suggest you stay from it.

  3. It could be Lightsheer or Milesman Premium. If you can take good settings on these lasers without burning, then go ahead! Go through LAgirl’s posts to see what “good” settings would be

May be these clinics want to see where the hair is. In which case, they should shave you on the treatment day after marking the hair-bearing areas with a white pencil.

Thank you mumbaigirl. I’m researching more spas now.

Can you or anyone else tell me if this is too good to be true:

http://www.clearstonespa.com/

The prices are half!! the usual prices. Its $170 for upper legs per treatment. They do not sell packages. They recommend coming in at 8 wks and not 4-8 weeks. They mention induced growth and a couple other fine print points. Unlike any other spa.

They use Epicare Duo (which apparently has both alexandrite and yag wavelengths). Never heard of this brand and I couldn’t find much on this board about it except for only 1 poster. Is this machine any good?

Is this worth a try or too good to be true?

Citysearch and yelp reviews are proving to be of less value because all of these spas have tons of 5 stars…makes me think it’s mainly the spa employees who are filling up the reviews…

I’m very impressed with the website and yes, it does sound too good to be true.

For legs, you might not need treatments more often than 12-16 weeks.

Specifications of the machine are good. Plus, they mention on their website they have the zimmer cooling system and that is really really cool. Pun intended!

I suggest you have a patch test at this clinic and report the settings and results here.

All the best!

lol

Well I’ve scheduled a consultation/test patch appointment…will update a few days later

Do you think nd:yag lasers, regardless of the brand, will work with similar efficacy?

No

I went to this place today! They refused to use yag on me saying I was too light!?! (I’m light for Indian skin but still not so light like caucasians or the white skinned middle eastern people…all other places have indexed me as a Fitz type 4). This place didn’t do the Fitz scale saying it’s clear that the alexandrite would be the machine of choice for me given my skin tone (BTW, they have both alexandrite and yag in one epicare duo machine)

Then they did a test spot with the alexandrite on me. It stung and it still is burning. The area still burns 3 hours later. I asked her if the alexandrite wouldn’t burn me and she said no. I’m quite confused now. Their spot size used is the max which is 18mm but she refused to divulge the joules and pulse width. That said, whatever she did surely hurt and I can’t take higher settings.

I had treatment with the soprano on lower legs 1-2 years ago. While it stung equally during treatment, after 10-15 mins, the burning had gone though the redness remained for a day.

What should I do?

They don’t do packages, have good pricing. Clearly mentioned the stinging (unlike other places who say on no it doesn’t hurt blah blah).

Comments please?

They’re right. You can be light enough for an Alexandrite laser even if you’re Indian.

Wait for 2 to 3 weeks to see if you have any pigmentary changes and shedding.

They can’t refuse to tell you YOUR settings.

No offence but you don’t look too light for a YAG, how is your skin now?

^That’s what I thought. Definitely not offended. I’m looking for efficacy and safety. It’s reduced in redness. The burning was gone a day later after the test spot. I have pictures which I’ll upload in a day or so.

I don’t know. This is disappointing. I’ve looked at all the major spas in my city so far.

And then today I read up all the threads on long term effects (cancer) from LHR. So that only fueled my pre-existing fears about this especially since I’m young and already have a history of cancer (not skin). Might not follow up on LHR.
