hello, this is my first post here. It’s been nice to read posts from other people with similar problems. Here’s my story. I’m a 21 y/o male who since the age of 16 has been getting hair on my shoulders, and upper back (not to mention chest and abdomen). I was dating a girl for almost 4 years when the problem was managable with shaving. I didn’t tell her for a year but she suspected it from the occasional stuble. She was totally fine with it and convinced me to stop shaving it and stop worrying about it. That was great, but now we just split up and the hair has progressed enough to where I can’t manage it on my own. In all other aspects I’ve been told I’m very good looking, so I’m terrified at the prospect of turning down people because of my problem. My question is I know that electrolysis is the only real permanent solution but being that I’m only 21 would it have less of an effect? I’ve read that it’s better to do as much with laser as you can and finish it off with electrolysis. I’d like to get on this as soon as possible so I don’t have to dwell on this. Most of my back is fine but I fear that with time it may spread. What’s the best approach, please help!? I’m even open to waxing for the time being but I don’t want to have to go all the time. What’s the usual grace period with that. Essentially I’d like to do electrolysis but I want to know if I’d be wasting my time and money at my age. thank you <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" />
Hey man your not the only one i have pretty much the same feelin as you about the whole thing. I dont know much about it but i will be 27 in a month and trying it soon so if i do get to a doctor soon i will gladly ask him the age qualifications since i am new to all of this also. Ill post something here when i visit the doctor even if someone replies to you.
Hello there,
Welcome to HairTell.
I think the first thing you need to decide is… are you ready for hair removal, and do you really want to. Then, you need need to schedule a lot of time for hair removing and it’s not cheap.
For me, I was quite worried about my body before I started hair removal, and after a few years of hair removing (or torturing), I am not that worried about body hair.
On top of ant’s suggestion, I would like to add that it must be your decision before you begin, and you must be dedicated both in devotion of time and money. However, you will likely find yourself greatly pleased whenever you are done.
In regards to your age, the male body will typically level off the growth of new hairs between the age of 25-mid thirties. Thin, blonde hairs (vellus hairs) can always thicken and darken however if they are removed they have no chance of this. I am 21 and have not seen an increase in body hair for the last year and a half, and I have hair in all the places my father does. You can never predict when or if new hairs will come in, but if you begin now and remove whatever you have, you would be able to see new hairs that are growing in and could remove them at will. This would also be much cheaper because it would not be as thick or heavy as you have now on your body. I think the last frontier of hair growth for males is probably the back and shoulders, as that is one of the last places where things develop in terms of hair growth. That is with the exception of the ears but that is usually hair that darkens, not new hair that grows.
If you are wondering whether or not to begin at 21 I would suggest it and I’m sure you will find your electrologist agreeing. With that being said, being in NY, you are lucky to be near several electrologists who have been recommended on these boards: James Walker, Fino Gior, Marie Vega, and Lucy Peters.
Keep in touch with everybody on here, its always good to see people’s progress and have updates on that progress.
