Why does my face look like this after a week?

In all my years, I have only ever encountered 2 people who said they had poor reactions to tea tree oil, as opposed to just using too much and getting a predictable response to overuse.

Even that overuse reaction goes away pretty quickly if attended to. I blame the sellers who don’t include the dropper stopper in the bottle and just allow the product to be poured out like water. One drop goes a long way. Even when using in a bath tub, it is only recommended that ten(10) drops be added to a full bath or small hot tub.

Tea tree oil is mis-used all too often. That’s why I sound like a redundant fool here, repeating constantly , “Just DABS, DABS, DABS!” for the first three nights.

It would be a fun experiment to have somebody with a LOT of treatment apply Tea Tree oil on one side and nothing on the other … and then assess the outcome (short term and long term).

My option (as I’ve often “nauseatingly” stated) is to put nothing at all on the electrolysis-treated skin. (But I’m not against tea tree oil … I’m agnostic! Mostly … sort of.)

I do have a friend with about 10 “tea tree” TRESS in his yard … they are “kind of pretty” in a creepy “weeping willow” sort of way. I wonder if I could "rub the bark or leaves on … " Well, no forget about that idea! Should I photograph these trees for Hairtell readers?

Crazy beautiful, I would like to know did you have ingrowns before you started the electrolysis treatment?

Let me start off by saying that I am no expert and have recently begun electrolysis myself – so this is just my experience and some may not agree with this. However, I experienced quite irritated follicles and dark spots following my first few treatments, especially in regions with coarse hair. I changed electrologists and the new one is really working hard so I don’t get any more scars and has advised the aftercare routine of neosporin topped with cortisone cream (with aloe). I have continued using this directly after my treatments and a few days after and I think it helps my skin heal tremendously. It’s slowly helping my previous scars heal and I definitely don’t experience the swelling or skin irritation I did in my first few treatments.

I think the improvement in my skin reactions is from a skilled electrologists as well as my aftercare. It might not hurt to try neosporin and a cortisone with aloe cream a few times to see if it helps heals the redness? Again, this is just something that I think is working for me.

Yes, I did. It was, I thought, from constant plucking. I plucked my face and did nothing else. I rarely shaved (maybe once a month when I was desperate to feel smooth like a woman) and refused to let it grow out. I would pluck away for hours! Since starting electrolysis in September, I’ve done nothing. I just use a shaving tool from time to time to trim the hairs between treatments if they’re long.

I haven’t used tea tree oil for the past week or so. I hate to say it, but my skin seems better. Most likely I was overusing the product. The kind I buy does not have a dropper and I was squirting out a decent amount onto a cotton pad and rubbing my face. I didn’t feel bothered by the product, but so many people have different opinions about it that I tried to stay away from it. It seems to have been a benefit. Again, most likely, I used too much. However, I’ll just stick with witch hazel and aloe vera.

Hi Crazybeautiful,

Has the redness dissipated a bit?

Oh yes!!! I would love to post a comparison photo, but I appear to be technology challenged. The photos here cannot be very big! I am working on it, though.
