It’s been a while, and I wanted to check in to share progress. Basically after a few holdups, I finally got all the parts together. I could not find the original project box for a reasonable price, so I purchased a different sized box from Radio Shack. But I wasn’t paying attention and the one I got was so small that It was only useful for the simple galvanic device. The knurled knobs that were recommended were also comically small, so I got a different set, also found at Radio Shack. A battery would not fit in my box, which is for the best, as I didn’t really want one anyway. So I purchased a 9 volt power supply and wired it in. The supply I got was specifically designed to replace a 9 volt battery. This is important because one doesn’t want any surprises with the amperage. My power supply was a bit weak compared to an actual battery, but the device does it’s job and won’t hurt me, so it’s great.
I did eventually follow the advice to remove the foot pedal, which wasn’t really necessary. I used a spare 1/8th to 1/4 adapter and soldered some wire into it to complete the circuit. This way I can unplug it and still use the pedal if I see a need for it. The BNC connectors, which stumped me earlier, ended up being something I had in plenty, as they were also recommended for a DIY oscilloscope I was looking to build.
I will say from experience that the screw-in components will eventually loosen and then you risk breaking wires/connections or shorting the device. I don’t think you’ll cause any fires, because it’s a pretty simple, low-power tool. But my experience is from modding sound for performances, and the only danger there is a lack of sound.
As for using the device, it’s been easy and worry free, if slow. I take my time with some Netflix and my spouse. Naturally, it will be a while before I can say just how effective it has been. I’ll report back when I have something to report.
My biggest challenge right now is to find a magnifying light that doesn’t cost hundreds of dollars.
