Hello,

I started electrolysis about 2 months ago and have been getting treatment every week on my upper lips and some other areas. I was being treated for 15 mins on upper lips area all times except one time. That session lasted for 30 mins and it was almost a full clearing. I jad hair growth very close together too and after that session (which was a month ago), it was leaking some clear fluid a little bit and was very inflamed for a few hours and got pretty scabby for a few days.
It’s been a month since that treatment. I’ve had two other sessions after that which lasted for only 15 mins. A couple weeks ago, I started noticing some pitting and hyperpigmentation. I’m super worried that these are permanent scars.
I’m not sure whether I should wait and see if it heals better, or contact a dermatologist right way.

Doesn’t have to be this way. Too harsh. Stop treatments and let it heal completely. Give your practitioner feedback so they adjust, learn and grow.

Yes, I’m stopping it for a while on that area. Other areas seem to be fine. I’m really hoping the pits aren’t permanent though.

I hope so, too. Many of us clear upper lip hair and we never see this harsh reaction.

Hi there, the upper lip is one of the smallest areas to treat with electrolysis. With that being said, it is best to wait longer in between treatments. Make sure to not pick the scabs off prematurely as this is the way to cause pitting.

Some people do have very poor skin reaction in this area, but your description of the treatment (scabs, leaking clear fluid) indicates that the treatment was too aggressive.

I think that you’ll see this resolve given enough time especially as the hyperpigmentation fades and improves the appearance of the pitting. If you don’t see any improvement at all after a year, you can consider options like microneedling, and I encourage seeing a dermatologist or reputable skin specialist if you choose to do that.

Yes, I’ve decided to let it heal naturally for at least 6-8 months,then opt for other treatments if it’s really bad.

Electrologist here. Your upper lip should not look like that post treatment and I would discontinue treatment and go with another practitioner. I’m so sorry this happened to you. Electrolysis does not do this to skin with proper treatment.

Yeah, I’ve discontinued electrolysis on my face. At this point I’m really hoping the pitting will be less noticeable over time.
