LHR diary - Alexandrite laser

You can’t tell what was missed until 3 weeks post treatment. The hair that grows as usual at that point was likely missed. Anything else, stuck in follicles etc and not growing, is fine.

I rang the clinic on Friday to make my next appointment. I do have hairs starting to grow out now, only a few, but I feel that in four or five days time they will be growing in with a vengeance! I’m really happy with my results so far though. Before, my armpits always looked off because the hair follicles were always upraised/fairly red because I had to shave them every day. Now they are smooth. Very exciting.

My clinic, though, actually has a new system to make sure people turn up for appointments. Today, I received an SMS from them asking me to confirm my appointment on Thursday by smsing them or ringing. Seemed quite cool… all I had to do was text yes to their number.

How long has it been since your treatment? You shouldn’t need one for at least 8 weeks. You don’t need to treat until there is actually enough hair there to treat. Otherwise, you’re sort of wasting some money.

I think it’ll end up being 7 weeks, so only one week shy of the 8 weeks, but some areas seem to have growth already, I was just assuming everything else would probably catch up by then.

Went for my second treatment today. The next cycle of hair was definitely growing in, I was back to shaving my armpits every day etc. I was lucky enough to get another tummy treatment for free… this time I’d shaved the whole area I wanted done (two inches wide, aroundabout) and the woman said she couldn’t remember how much it cost so she did it for free. Also did brazilian… I tried shaving beforehand but didn’t get it all, and it really hurts when they dry shave :S

But, the session went well and the girl I had today marked out the areas with a yellow highlighter. My normal practitioner is on holidays. This girl said I should come in at least every 6 weeks, but I just said I’d call and make an appointment. Because it’s my birthday, I got a $10 voucher as well. So I’m very happy with this place… also, it’s only about 10 minutes drive from where I live.

For anyone who lives in Adelaide, I’d definitely recommend Silk Laser… and if you mention me (PM me) when you go, I think I get a bonus

Well, two sessions down and things are going well!

EDIT: I just wanted to mention when looking at prices on websites… remember that things aren’t set in concrete. If I was going by their list price, (I ended up buying a package of six treatments for both my underarms and brazilian), the total of all this would have cost me $1,230. But with discounts and special pricings, it’s ending up costing me $680. That doesn’t necessarily mean you need to get a package, since if I got a package for everything, I’d have nothing to spend my vouchers on. But just remember to evaluate your options when you start out. Make sure you go t a great clinic with great results, and talk to staff. It’s worth it.

Ok - I booked my next appointment for the 20th of this month. That’s 8 weeks and one day since my last appointment. The hair has started growing back now, but I think by this time I’ll have heaps of hair and it will be glorious to behold the shedding, hehe. I’m pretty excited. I’m still debating whether or not to have the stomach done - I might get that done at a separate time, around another month from now, as not as much hair seems to be growing back.

Can’t wait!

Third treatment was today. I did underarms and brazilian.

For anyone wondering how to convince their tech to go to higher settings without much discussion, this is how I did it:

Emily: “Umm, last time you told me you did the treatment at 16joules right?”
Tech: “Yep. How’d it go afterwards?”
Emily: “It was fine, I wasn’t red anymore after like a couple of hours. Maybe I could go even higher?”
Tech: “Ahh, we usually don’t go higher because people find it hruts too much.”
Emily: “That’s cool. I didn’t mind the pain, I’m sure I can handle this.”
Tech: “Well, the higher the settings the better it should destroy the hair, and your skin type is II so there shouldn’t be any danger of burning. Let’s try it. Tell me if it hurts.”

Anyway, the tech ended up performing her first laser session on 18mm/18j/3ms (GentleLASE) doing a brazilian - she thought she might have to turn it down, but I clenched my hands through it - I hadn’t had any painkillers or EMLA.

Sometimes its better to pretend to be dumb when getting them to turn up settings, rather than trying to convince them that you’re smarter than them - some people WILL take that badly. Cus people are like that.

Anyway, smart person that I am, I then went and had 20 mins of electrolysis as well. I am in a world of hurt right now

I was really glad to have my usual tech back, last time I had a different girl. While she used the highlighter method of marking off what she’d done, I just found she did at least half the zaps of what my normal tech does. I can’t wait to be done!

That’s pretty much how I did it too  Thanks for the update!

The areas are going so well right now. It has been over a month since my last treatment, and I have maybe 6 vellus hairs growing back on both armpits. They look fantastic and it seems like I might need to go even more than two months til my next appointment, at this rate. This is after only three sessions.

Yes, you should be able to wait 11-12 weeks at this point.

Hey everyone, went for my fourth treatment yesterday. My underarms at this point (three months on) were finally almost growing back in as normal (quite coarse, fast growing, requiring shaving everyday) but seem to be a little less dense. On the brazilian area, however, I was still seeing fairly fantastic results but hair did seem to be starting to grow in, so I went in for my appointment.

While I was there I also got the girl to do my tummy, which she did for free, which is pretty nice of her. I really like the laser clinic I’m going to - for anyone interested, it’s Silk Laser Clinic on King William Road, Hyde Park. They have a website.

The only downer was that it hurt so much. I took a couple of panadol beforehand. At least it’s over so quickly it doesn’t really matter, but at the time it feels like it’s taking forever.

The girl was still trying to get me to make an appointment for five weeks time this time, which was laughable. At this stage in the proceedings, with the lengthening “no hair” gap, I probably won’t have any hair growing through by then. I just did my usual way too busy to book in advance thing.

I’m glad I’m so far through treatments now, as it’s summer here at the moment. Will I still need to wait 12 weeks or would it be longer?

It probably won’t be longer than 12 weeks, but just judge based on the regrowth you see. Go when there is enough there to treat.

emilily - has much new hair grown now since getting it done at the silk laser clinic?

mad, you’re asking impossible to answer questions here. Hair that was killed doesn’t grow back. Hair can’t regenerate. And if it wasn’t killed, something was wrong with the treatment.

mad1, the treatment has been successful for me. I just had my fifth treatment the other day. Just remember to enquire about settings, because the settings they use automatically may not be appropriate for you. The machine they use at Silk is a good one and with the right settings and a thorough session, you should see great results.

Even though I waited three months, there wasn’t much hair to be seen in the “next” cycle in the brazilian area. The underarms were pretty much the same. However, I never knew before how much hair I had in these areas which wasn’t thick and black. I still shave my underarms because I have long pale hairs growing. It really depends what sort of look you are happy with.

I have one more treatment left to go, but I am not sure if I will need it now.

Mad1, the best technician in the place is Theresa, if you are going to the clinic on King William.

We hope you will report on your results 6+ months after your last treatment and add it to our success stories thread

Just wondering if you paid upfront to get 25% off? The brazilian seems very cheap, as they have now put the price up to $90. So I was wondering if they allow you to pay upfront for the specials and get 25% off the special price, or only on normal prices.

I paid upfront as at the time, they had brazilian for $60 instead of the usual $90 so the savings were significant. They do let you pay for the six sessions at the special price. It was a bit of a gamble but because I was able to ask the technician to use higher settings and I knew she would at least start at 16j/18mm I was happy to go with it. The only thing I was worried about was that they were a new business, if they would go out of business before I could use all my sessions, which is always a gambit. But it has worked out for me so far. I’ve also had a friend go there on my recommendation and they are very happy with it, coming from having to get regular waxes every four weeks.
